You currently have an electric hot water tank to produce your domestic hot water, which operates at 95% efficiency, and consumes 25 GJ of electricity to per year. You get a new hot water tank, this time, it comes with an integrated heat pump water heater with an annual COP of 2. Assume:
- Hot water load evenly distributed every month
- Heat for heat pump is drawn from space around hot water tank, which is located in the house.
- Losses of the original tank were heat losses from the tank to its surrounding air.
- Space heating is required 4 months of the year.
- Cooling is required for 6 months per year.
How much energy does the new hot water tank consume? By approximately how much would the space heating and cooling energy demand change with the new tank?

In large buildings, hot water in a water tank is circulated through a loop so that the user doesn’t have to wait for all the water in long piping to drain before hot water starts coming out. A certain recirculating loop involves 300-foot-long, 1-inch--diameter PEX pipes with six 90° threaded smooth bends and two fully open gate valves. The PEX piping is considered to be smooth (roughness is 0). If the average flow velocity through the loop is 5 ft/s,...

The Florida Energy Factor (FEF) is used to compare the efficiency of domestic solar hot water heaters and to determine certain building construction credits. Solar water heaters with a high FEF are more cost efficient. Assume normality for the FEF distribution. A random sample of approved heaters was obtained, and the FEF value for each is given in the following: 3.3 3.2 1.8 2.1 4.2 3.9 4.6 6.3 1.9 1.9 4.9 6.7 5.2 3.1 1.4 Is there any evidence to...

My hot water system maintains a volume of 200L of water, which it heats at a rate of 1 ◦C per minute, up to a maximum temperature of 60◦C. On a winter's morning, the tank is full of water at this maximum temperature. While the shower is on, the tank is relled with water from the cold water source, which is at 10◦C. Assume the water in the tank maintains a uniform temperature (because is well-mixed). In my shower, the...
