Diuretics are the class of the medicines responsible for increasing the excretion of sodium and hence urine by the kidneys.

Following are the nursing actions that should be implemented while administering a diauretic medication the patients:

  • This first advice to have complete medical history regarding the electrolyte balance as well as desired renal function, which is responsible for excretion of the various salts by the kidney.
  • At the same time blood pressure is also required.
  • Asses the medication history and alcohol & nicotine consumption profile to avoid drug interaction chances.
  • Study of past drug allergies associated reports of patient.
  • Proper monitoring of the fluid intake by measuring intake, output & daily weight.
  • There is need to monitor hearing and vision associated changes specially in thiazide diuretics

Thus by considering the above mentioned practices the safe and effective therapy of diuretic can be achieved.
