4. How can you determine if an item is a whole grain?
5. What are THREE marketing ploys companies use to make consumers
think a bread or cereal is healthy when in reality it may not be
the healthiest choice?
6. What whole grains do you regularly consume?
4.Whole grain contains the entire grain kernel, the bran and endosperm, examples of whole grain include whole wheat, flour, oatmeal, brown rice etc, the best way to determine if it is whole grain or not is by reading the label containing the ingredients. look to see if the label contains the word " whole" in front of the grain like for eg, "whole wheat flour" and look for products that list whole wheat as the first product in the ingredient list, when you buy bread look for the "100% whole grain"stamp, because in 2005 the whole grain council began to release products that contains a "100% whole grain" stamp. This stamp allows consumers to identify whole grain products quickly and reliably.
5.One of the main ploy companys use is Deceptive labelling, they may include words like gluten free, organic, natural. antioxidants etc, and these nutritonal buzzword can mislead the consumers into believng that they are buying healthy food, in reality it is not so, for example the word "organic: is a method of farming not a health claim.Resarchers has confirmed that consumers are swayed by food packaging for eg people are more likely to assume that products with green label are more nutritous, when it is actually not so.Targetting children and adolscents, in recent years food industry has viewed children and adolscents as a major market force as a result children are now the target of intense and specialized food marketing and advertisment efforts, multiple techniques are used to reach the youth, begening when they are todlers to foster brand building and influence purchase, these might include television, in school marketing, product placements etc.
