Hazard reduction burning also known as controlled burning is a process of intentionally setting up a fire for forest management, farming, etc.
Its usually performed during winters when the danger of the fire spreading and causing a serious damage is less. This has certain benefits like -
Most commonly heard use of this is in agriculture which we call slash and burn agriculture. Herein when the crops have grown and harvested, the field is prepared for the next round of cultivation. To clear the field of remaining stalks and leftovers of the earlier crop, the land is burned. Its a less expensive procedure though obviously it causes air pollution and so nowdays is not so popular.
The method although quite controversial, and was not successful in controlling the Australian bushfires..
