DIET
Common dietery problems in elderly:
Poor appetite
Poor digetion
Chewing difficulties
Reduced taste
Loss of smell
Common health problems caused by poor diet and how these health problems impact:
Cancer of colon prostate, pancrease are associated with dietery fat intake. Increased blood pressure, glucose intolerance are the risk factors from fat dietery fat and which can result in coronary heart disease.Dementia, cardiovascular disease also can occur from high intake of fat.
Hyperglycemia, hypoglycemia,type 2 diabetes are caused by impaired glucose intolerance in elderly.
Edema and anemia are the result ofless intake of protien.
Older people are more prone to osteoporosis and fracture due to less intake of calcium.
Reduced food intake can lead to micronutrient deficiency, it is more common among the older population.and it can leads to low immunity and results in morbidity and mortality.
Support that can be provided to encourage a healthy diet:
Identify the specific dietery problem of each person.
Prepare proper menue
Encourage for adequate fluid intake
Provide small and frequent diet
Restrict the intake of high fat and fried food
Encourage for calcium and fiber rich diet.
EXERCISE
Common barriers to exercise in older people :
Lack of intrest
Joint pain
Lack of enery
Fear of injury
Common health problems caused by lack of exercise :
Reduced bone strength, muscle mass.
Reduced mobility.
Reduced acrdiovascular and respiratory function.
Reduced balance and cordination.
Lack of exercise in older people can increase the risk for obesity, high blood pressure, high cholestrol level,diabetes.
Support that can be provided to encourage healthy exercise :
Educate them about common health problems associated with lack of exercise.
Encourage them to be part of groups or community which promotes exercise.
Regularly check with the patient for frequency , time and intensity of their exercise.
EMOTIONAL WELLBEING
Common causes of wellbeing issues in older people or people with a disability:
Social isolation
Dependance on others
Financial problems
Grief
Depression
dementia
Effect of emotional and psychological problems on the healthy functioning of the major body systems
Poor mental health can leads to poor physical health. Emotional or psychological problem can affect badly on immune system.This affect on the major body system like cardivascular and respiratory system and increases the death among older people.
Support that can be provided to improve emotional wellbeing.
Sharing emotions/ feeling with others
Regular exercise
Geting enough sleep
Encourage to participate in games
Involvement of friends and family
Encourage to involve in hobbies
