In: Economics
Urban Office LLC, a major office furniture manufacturer, and
supplier, manufactures office tables
according to the customer requirements. They have a workshop
facility where the table is
fabricated and a painting facility where the final finishing and
painting of the table is done. The
company follows a Job Order scheduling process where each job is
scheduled using appropriate
priority rules. During a particular period, the company receives
six different orders from six different
customers. The six orders with the respective processing time are
listed in table 1. The orders
are listed in the sequence in which the orders are received.
Considering the finite capacity
scheduling method, determine the most appropriate job sequence
which will maximize the number
of jobs that can be completed on time. Discuss the reasons for the
selection of the sequence. If
all the jobs could not be finished on time, what appropriate
measures could be taken to solve the
problem?
Job Time at the workshop

Time at painting

Jobs | Time at workshop facility (Days) |
Time at painting facility (Days) |
Days remaining till due date |
A | 2 | 5 | 12 |
B | 2 | 6 | 10 |
C | 3 | 3 | 12 |
D | 5 | 4 | 9 |
E | 5 | 7 | 10 |
F | 5 | 3 | 11 |

Hey
The answer of the following question is given below as follows :
So this question is related with the N-job 2 Machine so we will apply Johnson's rule that will give the suitable sol.
So According to the Johnson's rule we selecte the highest processing time activity. If that time requires at 1st m/c. Place at start and if that time requires at 2nd m/c. Place at last.
So in the question we know that we have two facilities ie
1) Workshop facility
2) Painting facility.
Max. Time required for Job B at machine ( facility 2) so place it in the last.
Like this.
___ ___ ____ _____ ____ B
Now the next max. Is 6 days for job C at the facility 2 so place it at 2 last place.
___ ____ ____ _____ ____ C B
Now next max.is 5 days for A,E&F for job A,E&F at facility 2. So select these activities which requires min. Time of facility 1 which is 2 days for A&F.
___ ____ A. F. C. B
now next will be for 5 days which have the required time at facility 1 is 3 days is job E.
___ E A F C B
AND SO ON
D E A F C B.
TABLE ON IMAGE
SO there is four jobs which cannot be finished on time.
Ans.i ) For this case we should place a parallel facility which will reduce the work completion time.
I hope I have served the purpose well.
Thanks
