there have been an increasing number of editorials in newspapers and magazines about concerns over transport capacity and infrastructure. what is the nature of this issue? why is it such a problem? how can it be resolved?
The exponential growth of cities across the world has resulted in a population explosion in cities that has put its transportation systems and infrastructure under tremendous stress. This overcapacity of the transportation system and infrastructure has led to traffic congestions and lack of affordable housing in cities. Thus, there has been an increasing number of editorials in newspapers and magazines about concerns over transport capacity and infrastructure.
Modern cities have a high accumulation and concentration of economic activities. This has meant that cities have been burdened with overcapacity of the transportation system resulting in congestion, pollution, and longer transit time as well as created infrastructure problems like lack of affordable housing for all, lack of public space, and over-crowding. These complex issues are making cities increasingly unsustainable and creating social and environmental problems making most cities across the world virtually unliveable. This is the reason why concerns over transport capacity and infrastructure are becoming a problem.
In order to deal with this problem, cities need to adopt measures that promote urban sustainability on a large scale. The aim of urban sustainability is to make cities run on renewable sources of energy, decrease their carbon footprint, efficiently manage land and other natural resources, and adopt recycling as a way of life. Furthermore, urban centers should develop effective planning that relies on mass transit systems as a way of transportation over private vehicles.
