Taking the density of air to be 1.29 kg/m3, what is the magnitude of the linear momentum of a cubic meter of air moving with the following wind speeds?
a) 15 km/h
b) 74 mi/h—the wind speed at which a tropical storm becomes a hurricane
a) For a particle mometum=mv, where m is mass and v is velocity.
15 km/h=(15*5)/(18)= 4.17 m/s.
In one cubic metre, mass =density*volume
=1.29*1= 1.29 kg
momentum=mv=(1.29)*(4.17)
=5.375 kg-m/s
b)74 mi/h=33.081 m/s
mass=1.29*1=1.29 kg
momentum=mv=1.29*(33.081) kg-m/s
=42.67 kg-m/s
