It is midafternoon and you are canoeing down a river that empties into a large lake. You are having a hard time making progress because of a stiff wind in your face. Is this situation likely to get better or worse at sunset? Explain.

Solutions

Expert Solution

At sunset , this situation is likely to get better.

Explanation :

We know that the Specific Heat of water is much greater than that of rock and soil. So, at day time (midafternoon), the land warms up faster than the water. As a result, the air above this hotter land is also got heated up and become less dense than before ; causing the air to rise up because of the buoyant force. Therefore , a air gap is made in that place. To fill up this gap much densed (also much cooler) air comes from the large lake towards the land. This air is stopping you from making progress.

Now during the sunset , the land cools faster , reversing the convection cycle (i.e. now the air will flow from the land to the lake). That is why the situation would get better at the sunset.

Thanks in advance.

Best Regards.

"To decrease the cost of operating a lock in a large river, a new system of operation is proposed. The system will cost $840,000 to design and build. It is estimated that it will have to be reworked every 7 years at a cost of $130,000. In addition, a one-time expenditure of $72,000 will have to be made at the end of the fifth year for a new type of gear that will not be available until then. Annual operating...

A large population of fish live in a lake. The color of their scales is determined by two different alleles of the S gene, S1 and S2. Homozygous S1 fish have yellow scales, S2 homozygotes have blue scales, and heterozygotes are green. Scientists catch 100 fish at random and record their colors. Among those 100 fish are 30 yellow, 50 blue, and 20 green ones. After the original sample is analyzed, an asteroid landed in the lake and killed all...
