1. a) When a student places her hands on the metal surface of the Van der Graaff generator, the hair rises. Explain how and why this happens. b) Why the student should be isolated from the floor?
2. How does a lightning rod function and what is it made of?
3. What is high voltage and why is it dangerous?
4. What happens between a charged rod and a sphere if a piece of paper is placed between them?
1) a) When bring our hand close to the metal surface there will be an electrostatic attraction due to the formation of charged cloud around metal surface of Vande Graaff generator and this electrostatic attraction causes our hair rises.
b) Student should be isolated from the ground otherwise the excess charge start flowing through the body to the ground creating a hazardous current.
2) Lightining rod is a metal rod placed on the roof of building to protect the building from natural lightining. When a lightining strike the building it will strike the metal rod instead of structure. This metal is connected all the way down to the ground, so current is passed directly to the ground without damaging the building.
3) High voltage is the level of potential above which it can cause damage to instruments or human. It is dangerous as it produces spark whic can damage the appliances. Also, if a touch a high voltage, large amount of current flow through us burning our body.
4) If the piece of paper is brought close to the rod it will also get charged.
