(minimum of 250 words): In your own words, identify two positive accomplishments of the Reconstruction period (1863-1877) and why they are important to you to you in your individual lived experience; what conditions did these accomplishments have to overcome in order to see the light of day?
In my observation, two positive accomplishments of the Reconstruction period (1863-1877) are the abolition of slavery and laws that prohibits racial discrimination to allow African Americans to use the public transport systems. I strongly feel that these are the greatest achievements of the Reconstruction period because there was a greater level of participation of African Americans in the public life and also in the elections of the southern state government. It was the first time in the history of United States that African Americans were part of the elections. The Southern state government allowed them to participate in elections as well. It is pertinent to note that Southern black candidates won the elections.
Another achievement as mentioned above is the formulating and implementing the laws that prohibits racial discrimination. This is essential because there should be consistency in the reforms during the Reconstruction period. These laws would ensure that the slavery and discrimination is abolished at all times. The African Americans would be able to use the public transportations and also the accommodations without being discriminated. These achievements gave a new life for the African Americans and the government established themselves as being fair and ethical in their decisions and actions. It is important that the citizens of America have the right to vote without being discriminated. Similarly, it is also important that they are not discriminated from using the public transportation system based on the race, color, etc. These achievements or reforms protects the people of America and provides them equal rights irrespective of their color or race.
