HCl significantly reduced pH when added to water. For 1x10^-3M HCl solution, find the pH and [HCl] concentration at equilibrium. Solve problem by assuming whether solution is acidic or basic and using approximation method.

HCl = H+ + Cl- K = 10^+3

Is it true that HCl almost completely dissociates in this system?

Solve the problem again. This time assume that HCl completely dissociates and do not make an assumption about acidicity.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Initial             10^(-3)M      0          0

Final          (10^(-3)-x)M     x         x

pH = -log(9.999 * 10^(-4)) = 3.000002

[HCl] will be almost 0, i.e. 0.0000000001M

Hence the HCl complete dissociates into system
