The woman who had just given birth stays in the obstetric and maternity ward. She is alone. She is 25 years old. She is constantly calling the nurse with her bell.

Patient: Nurse, my ears are ringing, can you check my blood pressure?

The nurse checks blood pressure and evaluates it normally. The patient asks her blood pressure to be checked again after 10 minutes. The nurse says she checked it 10 minutes ago and has a lot of work to do.

Patient: Nurse, my arm where you put cannula hurts a lot. Have a look?

When the nurse checks the cannula, she sees that there are no problems. The patient calls the nurse again before 15 minutes have passed.

Patient: Nurse I felt like solution was not flowing.

When the nurse checks, she sees that the vascular access (IV cannula) is open and she says sternly: "There is no problem."

the nurse may think that the patient may suffer from postpartum pshychosis. Because the patient experience the symptoms odf delusion and hallucination. so the nurse may suspect for post paartum psychosis and the patient has to treated immediately.

the postpartum psychosis usually appears within one month of child birth. and may include

- increased physical and emotional tension

-confusion or very argumentive

- delusions ( unusual beliefs or belief in something which is not based on reality)

- hallucinations ( unusual perceptions , such as seeing or hearing things)

the management of postpartum psychosis is

- urgent assesssment -

-medication

- hospital admission

-help looking after the baby

the nurse behaviour can be evaluated by by direct observation, continuing education, examinations, peer rreview , self assessment, interview, patient outcomes

As a nurse , provide psychological support to the patient. Helpthe patient to overcome depression and anxiety. the nurse has to encourage patient to express her feeilgs and insecurities. arrange for counselling for the client.
