CoCl2 + FeCl3 -----> Molecular formula: Total ionic : Net ionic : - I know it does not react so would the net be the same as the molecular? If not , please explain (redox, etc)
Answer
CoCl2 + FeCl3 CoCl3 + FeCl2
The ionic equation for the given reaction is,
Co(2+) + Cl(-) + Fe(3+) + Cl(-) Co(3+) + Cl(-) + Fe(2+) + Cl(-)
To get the net ionic equation, the cross out the common ions on both sides of the arrow. The net equation is given below,
Co(2+) + Fe(3+) Co(3+) + Fe(2+)
The reaction with simultaneous reduction and oxidation is called as redox reaction. It involves the transfer of electrons from one atom to another. The reducing agent loses electrons and the oxidation agent gains electrons. In the above reaction, oxidation number of Iron and Cobalt was changed after reaction due to the transfer of electrons. Co2+ loses one electron and become Co3+, Fe3+ gains one electron and becomes Fe2+. Therefore, it is a redox reaction.
Thank you. Good luck.
