wine goes bad soon after opening because the ethanol (CH3CH2OH) in it reacts with oxygen gas (O2) from the air to form water (H2O) and acetic acid (Ch3COOH),the main ingredient of vinegar. what mass of water is produced by the reaction of 8.9g of oxygen gas?

Solutions

Expert Solution

The balanced reaction is :

CH3CH2OH + O2 -----> H2O + CH3COOH

MOlar mass of O2 = 2xAt.mass of O

                            = 2 x16

                            = 32 g/mol

Molar mass of H2O = ( 2xAt.mass of H) + At.mass of O

                             = ( 2x1) + 16

                            = 18 g/mol

According to the balanced reaction,'

1 mole = 32 g of O2 produces 1 mole=18 g of water

8.9 g of O2 produces M g of water

M = ( 8.9x18) / 32

   = 5.0 g of water

Therefore the mass of water produced is 5.0 g
