Introduction - Electronic health records represents a major advance technology in health care system.In simple words,it is a digital version of patient chart.It improves patient safety,reduce health care cost and expenditure.Alongwith,benefits it have introduced new challenges and some specific safety issues.
Many clinicians report that EHR are difficult to use,require too much time to perform certain tasks.
There are some policies which improving EHR systems by eliminating challenges which can lead harm to patient and make EHRs more efficient and less time consuming.
Policy for usability and safety like providers cannot share screenshots or videos of the usability or safety issues without permission.
Policies tocreate transparency,like to prohibit vendors from blocking their health care organisation clients from participating in usability and safe study.
Policies require to prevent the timely dissemination of information.
Policies like adding EHRs to curriculum can also help students to learn technology better.
Government introduced policies like Health information technology for economic and clinical health (HITECH) signed in America to adopt and use electronic health records.
Importance for students to understand issues related to EHRs in course- One of the biggest success factor can be good education of students in the right form,right time and in right length to learn the technology and its issues.
Students should be guided in before entering workplace so as they can work more effectively,to deal with level of errors and atleast they have minimal experience of using EHRs.
It is also important for students because as technology is more in use now-a-days.Adding EHRs in curriculum will make the students one step closer to the technology.
