Interoperability and health information exchange are the widely used terms in health care system. Both the terms are often confused by the providers and the patient, thinking they both are same because of the purpose they serve in the healthcare industry.
Interoperability is the communication between the two or more software systems. The institution for electronic and electrical engineering defines interoperability as " the ability of two or more system or components to exchange information and to use the information that has been exchanged." This means the software is built in a way that it can share information as well as interpret the shared information.
Health information exchange enables the providers and the receivers to exchange the health and behaviour information within a region, community or hospital systems, electronically. The privacy of the patient is protected by state and federal law. In health information exchange, the patient has the right to decides to keep his record private and not accessible to all, if needed.
To say that two systems are interoperable, the system must share the data and the other system must comprehend and simplify the received data for the easy understanding of the user. This is counted on the ability of software in exchange and share information, from the various sources such as clinics, laboratory, radiology, healthcare industry etc.
In health information exchange, the individual has more control over its data to be shared, whereas interoperable gives the power to "exchange and use" the data provided.
