why is Hcl needed in the sythesis of p-Chlorophenoxyacetic Acid?

Solutions

Expert Solution

p-chlorophenoxyacetic acid is a well known pesticede (a substance used for destroying insects or other organisms harmful to cultivated plants or to animals.) It used to eliminate or control a variety of agricultural pests that can damage crops and livestock and reduce farm productivity. In the preparation of p-chlorophenoxyaceticacid the hcl plays a main roal. hcl is a good mineral acid (an acid derived from one or more inorganic compounds)  and highly pungent solution of hydrogen and chlorine in water. In the preparation of this pesticide hcl is used for the acid hydrolysis (in organic chemistry, usually refers to a process in which a protic acid is used to catalyze the cleavage of a chemical bond via a nucleophilic substitution reaction, with the addition of the elements of water (H2O).) because of this reason HCL is used in the sythesis of p-chlorophenoxyacetic acid. The molecular formula of p-chlorophenoxyaceticacid C8H7ClO3.

Consider the titration of a weak base (B- ) with a strong acid (HCl). Draw (this can be hand drawn) a pH (not pOH) vs mL HCl graph (it will not look the same as the one in question #13; if you start with a weak base, will the pH be low or high? As H+ is added, will the pH increase or decrease?). Label the titration curve with letters A-E, and describe the relative quantities of the dissociated base...
