Discussion #21 – Electromagnetic Waves - Physics 221
2. Electromagnetic Waves and Intensity
Goal: Practice with the intensity of electromagnetic waves.
2 The intensity of an electromagnetic wave is 10 W/m .
a) What is the intensity if the electric field is doubled?
b) What is the intensity if the magnetic field is doubled?
c) What is the intensity if the frequency is doubled?
3. Miscellaneous Wave Properties
Goal: Practice working with various properties of waves. These are unrelated parts.
a) How many minutes does it take light from the sun to reach us (use the solar system data in the book)? From Proxima Centauri (4×1016 m)?
b) How many kilometers in a light year of distance? (Light year is a distance travel by light in 1 year.)
c) A satellite travelling to Mars at 5.1 x 106 m/s sends a radio signal to earth when it is 43 million km away. A receiver on earth immediately sends the signal back when it gets it. How far has the satellite travelled between sending and receiving signals?
d) How many 4×1018 Hz x-rays fit in one wavelength of 3×108 Hz radio waves?
e) What is the magnitude of the electric field of a 2.45 GHz electromagnetic wave with and magnetic field strength of 3×10-11 T?
