According to the Belmont Report, the ethical principles that guide all research involving human subjects are these 3 -
Defination for Each Term is-
a. Maleficence -the act of committing harm or a harmful evil act
b.Justice- The idea that the benefits of new or experimental treatments must be distributed equally among all groups in society. Requires that procedures uphold the spirit of existing laws and are fair to all players involved. The health care provider must consider four main areas when evaluating justice: fair distribution of scarce resources, competing needs, rights and obligations, and potential conflicts with established legislation.
c. Respect for Human Dignity- Dignity is the right of a person to be valued and respected for their own sake, and to be treated ethically. It is of significance in morality, ethics, law and politics as an extension of the inalienable rights.
d. Beneficence-Requires that the procedure be provided with the intent of doing good for the patient involved. Demands that health care providers develop and maintain skills and knowledge, continually update training, consider individual circumstances of all patients, and strive for net benefit.
e.Confidentiality - Confidentiality is that practice which helps to keep secret all information. The maintenance of secrecy refers to the unrevealing of any data concerning the client's business or technical processes that are not already in public knowledge.
4. You are a nurse researcher at LIU and want to perform a study to see how women incarcerated in state prison cope with separation from their children. The procedures you will take to protect the study participants are-
a.Receive approval to do the study from the university’s Institutional Review Board
The IRB’s purpose is to ensure that clinical trials are ethical and that the participants’ rights are protected. The IRB reviews the trial’s protocol before the study begins.
An IRB will only approve research that deals with medically important questions in a scientific and responsible way. The IRB also checks on results during the trial. All U.S. clinical trials are required to have an IRB.
d.Justify that the benefit of the research outweighs any risks to the participants
The study to be performed if Justified to the IRB will only get approved if its benefits outweights any risks to participants otherwise it will voilate the ethical laws.
