1.Lack of interest-
There has been drastic lowering in the number of people appearing
for giving their votes lately. At least 40% to 90% of American
voters stay home during elections, evidence that low voter turnout
for both national and local elections is a serious problem
throughout the United States. The apathy for voting is actually an
apathy of getting out of your home and going to vote. To some the
thought of standing in a queue at the polling places doesn't seem
worth the effort. Some show total indifference towards voting. The
decrease also coincides with the rise of the Internet. Nowadays,
more and more people consume information through ‘social media echo
chambers’, rather than reading daily newspaper headlines or tuning
in to the morning news.
2.Lack of knowledge -
Many people who don’t vote believe they don’t understand enough
about the government, the election process or individual party
policies.
This is largely down to the education system, which does not
equip students with relevant political knowledge. The majority of
schools teach politics only as an opt-in subject at GCSE and
A-level, if they offer it at all.
Consequently, many students leave school by 18 with little to no
knowledge of the political system.
This was regarding the literate population with inadequate knowledge about voting. But there's a whole lot of people who have absolutely no idea what-so-ever about voting and in general the running of government.
3.Voter suppression -
It has been noted that the Republican led efforts to diminish participation in voting and voter registration have greatly contributed to the number of nonvoters.
Since 2010, 25 states have adopted measures specifically aimed at making voting more difficult. Such measures include additional voter identification requirements.
Sometimes lawmakers said these were necessary to curb illegal voting, which research shows is an all-but-nonexistent problem.
Some counties and states have also created confusion and uncertainty about how to initially register or re-register after a voter has moved.
In other cases, people might not know where to vote, due to the distribution of deliberately false information.
Since the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Shelby County v. Holder in 2013 that key aspects of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 were unconstitutional, states have closed over 1,000 polling locations, half of these in Texas.
