An electric charge on the x axis oscillates sinusoidally about the origin. A distant observer is located at a point on the +y axis.

Part A

In what direction will the electric field oscillate at the observer's location?

x,y or z?

Part B

In what direction will the magnetic field oscillate at the observer's location?

x,y or z?

Part C

In what direction will the electromagnetic wave propagate at the observer's location?

+x,-x,+y,-y,+z, or -z?

Solutions

Expert Solution

partA) the correct option is = x direction.

we know from the properties of electromagnetic waves,  the electric field travels in a direction which is parallel to the direction of oscillating charge , its given in the question that the charge is oscillating along the x axis which means its parallel to x axis.

part B) the correct option is =z direction

from the property of waves we know that magnetic field travels in a direction which is at right angle  to the direction of electric field, we have propagation direction is  in y direction and electric field will be is x direction, , so x and y are already taken out and we are left with z direction, so the magnetic field will be z direction

part C) the correct option is =+y direction

electromagnetic waves are light waves and they are travelling directly from origin to the observer located at +y axis as we know light waves always travels in a definite path.
