The New Deal brought the federal government into the role of providing relief to Americans affected by the structural crisis of the Great Depression. Many critiqued these reforms because they infringed on the responsibility of the states and localities to set social policy and provide relief. Thinking of what you have learned about this time, what do you think is the appropriate role for the federal government and for the states and localities in social welfare policy?
Federal government : It is a type of government which is composed of legislature, executive and judiciary and the powers of all these are vested in the hand of president.
SOCIAL WELFARE POLICY : It consists of all the methods that are followed in order to provide welfare to the citizens like healthcare, employment, empowerment.
Appropriate role for the federal government and for the states and localities in social welfare policy
1. JUDICIAL HELP: The people facing any sort of problems can approach the court, provided the problems should be legal like murder, domestic violence, rape etc. This is the foremost need of the citizens of a country.
2. HEALTHCARE: It is also the responsibility of the government to provide basic healthcare facilities to the citizens as many of them would not be able to afford the expenses. Healthcare may include subsidised medicines , free or discounted tests .
3.SOCIETY DEVELOPMENT: It is the responsibility of the government to ensure the overall development of the society and also to make sure that the children, women, girls are provided with extra care and benefits and also along with that no harm is being done to them. it also includes people to be self sufficient and able to meet their needs, so government must try to develop the society.
4.EMPOWERMENT: People do take women and girls for granted , so the government is supposed to empower women by methods like self defence trainings and some extra provisions so that they know what rights they have and can fight for that.
