What is the Larmor frequency?
The Larmor or precessional frequency in MRI refers to the rate of precession of the magnetic moment of the proton around the external magnetic field. It is the resonant frequency of a nucleus.
How is the Larmor frequency related to the Hydrogen nucleus?
If an RF pulse at the Larmor frequency is applied to the nucleus of an Hydrogen atom, the protons will alter their alignment from the direction of the main magnetic field to the direction opposite the main magnetic field. In that case for protons (hydrogen nuclei), the Larmor frequency is 42.58 MHz/Tesla.
The Larmor frequency corresponds to which part of the spectrum of electromagnetic radiation in MRI?
The Larmor frequency lies in the range of tens to hundreds of MHz. These frequencies are part of the electromagnetic spectrum commonly used for radio transmission (Radio wave spectrum).
How does one increase the Larmor frequency?
One can increase the Larmor frequency by increasing the strength of the externally applied magnetic field.
