Describe the electron cloud for SO3 and CO3(2-).

Describe the electron cloud for SO3 and CO3(2-).

Solutions

Expert Solution

Answer – We are given the molecule SO3 and CO32- and we need to describe the electron cloud for each –

1)SO3 – We know in this one the S atom is the center atom and according to Lewis dot structure of the SO3

Total valance electrons = 6 + 6*3

                                        = 24 electrons

So in the SO3 molecule there are 24 electrons spread on the S and 3 O.

There are 12 electron around the central atom and 12 electron on the 3 O. So electron cloud distributed equal on the center atom and the other 3 atoms.

2) CO32- – We know in this one the C atom is the center atom and according to Lewis dot structure of the CO32-

Total valance electrons = 4 + 6*3 +2

                                        = 24 electrons

So in the CO32- molecule there are 24 electrons spread on the C and 3 O.

There are 8 electrons around the central atom and 16 electrons on the 3 O. The one two -O has more electron density and it is revolving within the 3 O.
