Ans- C ( In mammals, where
fertilization occurs internally i.e egg fuse with single sperm to
form zygote and it is important that no additional sperm fuse with
the zygote's plasma membrane. In mammals this is achieved by
immediate changes in electrical properties of the plasma membrane
(fast block within second or slow block within minute). The Zona
reaction occurs within a minutes of fertilization and it is induced
by the content of cortical granules, small membrane bound organelles
that underly the egg plasma membrane, which are deposite into the
zona pellucida following the cortical reaction which involves
fusion of cortical granules and plasma membrane with exocytosis of
cortical granules contents into the zona pellucida and this
reaction occurs due to release of Ca+2 from egg
cytoplasm, causes hardening of the zona pellucida so binding of
additional sperm to the zona pellucida are prevented.
