NPI

NPI is a single identification number (10 digit numerical identifier) issued by federal government to health care providers. It helps to improve the efficiency and reduce fraud and abuse of the health care system.

Process of applying NPI Number

Before starting the application, kindly make sure that you have the following things

  1. It is an online application
  2. The person needs 9 digit Employer Identification Number (EIN) approved by the IRS ( Internal Revenue service)
  3. 8 digit Medicaid provider number
  4. Taxonomy code ( "251300000X" for all counties and school districts)
  5. NB- after completing online application, never hit BACK or FORWARD button, which lose information you enetered. Only maximum of 30 minutes allowed to complete or else time out and you have to begin the process again

Process

  1. Visit https://nppes.cms.hhs.gov
  2. Click ''National Provider Identifier '' (NPI)
  3. Click "Apply Online for an NPI"
  4. Scroll to bottom of screen and click "Begin Application Form"
  5. Create NPI User ID and Password
  6. NB- it is advised to put user ID incorporate with the name of the organization as user id cannot be changed
  7. After creating user id, follow instructions, while moving through the screens
  8. Entity Type is type 2, "Organization"
  9. Employer Identification Number (EIN)= 9 digit federal ID number
  10. Screen entitled: "NPI Application Form- Other Identification Numbers": Click on "add identifier" and note the following
  11. Type : Medicaid
  12. Identification Number should be 8 digit Medicaid Provider Number
  13. State is NY
  14. Leave Blank on Description
  15. Screen entitled: "NPI Application Form- Other Identification Numbers": Click on "add identifier" and note the following
  16. Provider Type Code is "25 Agencies"
  17. Classification Name- Area Of Specialization: "251300000x- Local Education Agency( LEA)"
  18. Leave blank on License Number and State where Issued
