Explain how the sequence of eruption of the permanent dentition plays a role in the establishment of a normal occlusion.

Eruption is the axial or occlusal movement of a tooth from its developmental position within the jaws to its functional position in the occlusal plane. The eruption timing of permanent teeth is very important so that the diagnostic, preventive and therapeutic measures can be planned. The maxillary and mandibular first molar appears first. These get erupted behind the most posterior primary teeth. The permanent molars can be referred by their age of eruption. The first molars are called the six year molars and the second molars are referred as twelve year molars.
The first permanent molars usually erupt between 5.5 and 7 years of age. Then after exfoliation of the mandibular central incisors takes place. The mandibular permanent incisors erupt with the maxillary incisors between age 7 to 9. The anterior teeth get developed behind the primary teeth and the permanent premolars get developed between and beneath the roots of primary molars which they replace. A bulge, which is a crown of erupting teeth, get appeared often in the gingiva before an eruption of a permanent canine or incisor.
Occlusion is the static morphological tooth contact relationship. These sequence of eruption in the permanent teeth helps in the occlusion.
