For each of the following compounds, please provide:

a) The best Lewis dot structure for the compound (include any non-zero formal charges). Draw this structure as a 3 dimensional representation that reflects the electron domain geometry for the compound.

b) The electron domain geometry for the compound. In other words, what would be the geometry if all lone pairs were replaced with atoms?

c) The molecular geometry for the compound. For the starred compounds below, there is more than one possible geometry. In that case, draw all possible geometries and indicate which of the geometries you have drawn is the best one, explaining how you arrived at the answer.

d) The location of any one mirror plane through the compound (if they exist). For example, CO2 has two sets of mirror places, one through the O-C-O axis, and another that bisects the O-C-O axis. Please be specific in your answer.

N2O SeBr4[*] ClOF2+ XeF3+[*]

SCl3F3 [*] I3+ SCN- H2SO4

Expert Solution

Answer: the lewis dot structure generally shows the bonding between atoms of a molecules and the lone pairs of electrons that may exist in the molecules.

now the lewis dot stucture can be draw by using some simple steps

like : 1 step : Here N2O the central atom is N atom since it less electronegative connect the atoms with single bond

N -- N -- O

step2 : calculate the pi electrons by using P = 6n + 2 - V

here n is number of atoms { here 3 atoms } , V is the total valence electrons [ 5+5+6 = 16 electrons ]

hence the P would be equal to = 4

means there is 4 pi electrons therefore 2 double bond or 1 triple bond must be added to the structure like

N= N = O <-----------> N =_ N - O <---------> N - N=_ O

now show the unshared paired electrons of the atoms

So by follow all these steps we can easly make lewis dot structure.

now for others make sure to maintain there charge like if we have ClOF2+  the compound has a 2+ charge means it losses 2 electrons and now follow the same steps to draw the lewis structure

Now after making the lewis structure then check the stability of compounds means in which struure the all octates are complete and the charge should mininum . to judge the geometry of the compound

So just try to make all others lewis structure by follow the same steps
