vA 15-year-old female is admitted to the hospital with a concussion after a biking accident. During the admission assessment, the patient confides in the RN that she doesn’t wear a helmet when she rides her bike. A nursing care plan has been developed using the NANDA-I nursing diagnosis Deficient Knowledge related to insufficient information about hazards of biking as evidenced by patient statement, “I don’t wear a helmet when I bike.” The outcome: The patient will verbalize the importance of wearing a helmet when biking before discharge. • Describe safety concerns related to this developmental stage. • Identify three (3) interventions that would help this patient achieve the outcome. • Include your rationale for each intervention. • If the outcome is not met, how will you change the plan of care? Base your initial post on your readings and research of this topic. Your initial post must contain a minimum of 250 words. References, citations, and repeating the question do not count towards the 250 word minimum.
Safety concerns in adolescent years
During adolescence, teens struggle with seperating from their parents, establishing their own identity, and becoming more independent.they often are influenced by peer pressure and can feel invincible, which may lead them to risky behavior.
There are safety issues related to physical growth and increased strength and agility that usually devolop before other skills, such as decision making, common sence and good judgement
Motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death in the adolescent years.Automobile accidents are more common among young drivers who use alcohol, marijuana, or other drugs while driving.
They are especially susceptible to injury when riding minibikes, snowmobiles, or motorcycles,a sport that is increasing in popularity.
Those who ride behind the driver of a motorcycle may burn their legs on the exhaust pipe.
The persistent noise of a motorcycle when ridden for long periods of time may result in a decrease in the ability to hear.
Adolescents may be thrown from the motorcycle.
Other causes of accidental death during the adolescent years are drowning and firearms.
Many young adults are injured each year in competetive sports.
Violence--school violence,sexual violence,youth violence,dating violence etc
Food safety issues,Carbon monoxide poisoning, depression and suicidal tendencies
Three interventions to achieve the outcome and their rationales
1.encourage to be a disciplined individual to become safe and courteous driver,to save their own lives as well as those of others---learning to discipline themselves will help to adhere to good behavioral norms
2.educate the patient about the safe driving habits and use of helmet which is an effective deterrant to head injury.---providing with necessary information will help the patient from ending up with accidents caused by ignorance.
3.making the patient to participate in an educational program to raise awareness about the fatal effects of unsafe driving, using examples of people who underwent such incidences, and that it is preventable with some simple safety precautions such as use of helmet.-----perceived threat will motivate to follow healthy behavior
If the desired outcome is not achieved, a different approach can be considered.
Promote effective communication between parents and teenager which will play a vital role in ensuring safety.Parents should pay attention to their tone of voice when they are giving their teen advice or guidance, and it is important to show respect for the teen's intelligence and experience.
Make the patient informed about current information regarding health and safety and encourage parents to do so on a day-to-day basis. In many cases, allowing teens to read information is more effective than talking or lecturing
