I hope you will rate my answer positively .

Cognitive dissonance--. It is the state of having inconsistent thoughts , beliefs, attitudes, especially as relating to behavioural decisions and attitude change.

For example -- we love the environment but still we see use of plastic garbage bags .that feeling of mental discomfort about use of plastic bags is an example of cognitive dissonance.this occur because our belief is clashing with our actions or behaviour .here this situation can be resolved by change in behaviour of the people by choosing not to use plastic bags which is better for environment.

Another example of cognitive dissonance is the rationalization that takes place when people dieting cheat. If their is doughnut available in front of eye . We justify it that doughnut by telling yourself that we didn't actually intend to be strict about diet or that the diet is only part of weight loss plan . And we decide to exercise later so , cheating a little bit is now okay.

Another example - women smokes cigarette despite knowing it can lead to lung cancer . She continues it because she tell herself she need it to reduce anxiety . In this example she is reducing the dissonance by convincing herself the behaviour is okay in her mind.

Thankyou.
