Discuss Home Economics teaching in Ghana: Strengths and Weaknesses (at least 6 pages).
Strength
When Home Economics is mentioned, it usually brings to mind sewing aprons and cake baking. however, Home Economics is much more than that. there is no other academic discipline that incorporates in its curriculum many pertinent life skills that helps students succeed independent of their chosen career paths. knowledge gained is valuable throughout the lifespan.
One strength of the Home Economics is that, we pay attention to human family resource management and our understanding is wide and versatile. The mission of Home Economics as stated by the international Federation of Home Economics in 1988 was to enable families develop, use and manage human and material resource for the greater welfare of individuals, families and society.
Weakness
In the early days, home economics was a single field and all the
students took the same course of study. As it grew and as knowledge
developed, it moved toward the unified field concept. This concept
holds that some areas of home economics are basic to others, as the
study of textiles, for example, is part of the
environment of families. The third or collection-of-specialities
view has been emerging recently as the profession grows and
develops. The drawbacks of this view have become very apparent
because it
has become increasingly difficult to tie these specialities
together as a conceptual unit. Other than this, main part is Ghana
is facing lot of challenges in teaching home economics. It includes
well trained teachers, equipped facilities, proper infrastructure
etc
