Diagram and describe the CAMP test – purpose and interpretation

Solutions

Expert Solution

CAMP test is a microbiological assay used to diagnose of both Group B Streptococcus agalactiae and many gram-positive rods, including Listeria monocytogenes.isolated from clinical specimens.

principle :

CAMP test detects the formation of diffusible, thermostable, extracellular protein known as CAMP factor or B protein, produced by Group B Streptococcus. The CAMP factor acts synergistically with the beta lysin produced by Staphylococcus aureus which enhances the lysis of red blood cells.

Extract of Staphylococcal beta-lysin was diffused in the medium around the S. agalactiae colonyprior to the addition of CAMP factor. A positive CAMP reaction is indicated by an enhanced hemolysis within 30 minutes to 1 hour of adding a drop of CAMP factor reagent.

Interpretation of CAMP Test :

Positive result : at the junction of the two organisms enhanced hemolysis is indicated by an arrow head-shaped zone of beta-hemolysis when they are placed perpendicular to each other.

Negative result : No enhancement of hemolysisoccurs.
