THE FOLLOWING MEASURES THAT MAINTAIN NORMAL FECAL ELIMINATION PATTERN

  1. PRIVACY - Lack of privacy affect the normal fecal elimination pattern.Defecating is a private thing. Most pateints may have a hard time having a bowel movement away from the sense of privacy in their home.It leads to constipation because need privacy for the patient. Close the door of the toilet or pull curtain around the bed while defecating.Privacy is very important because it helps the patient feel comfortable for defecation.
  2. TIMING - Timing is another factor of maintain fecal elimination pattern. Trying to go to the bathroom at the same time everyday that helps to maintain your body to have regular bowel movements.
  3. NUTRITION AND FLUIDS - Lack of fluid intake, irregular mealtime, type of food, and interruption of usual schedule can lead constipation.Sufficient fluid is needed to keep the fecal mass soft. To take more dietary fiber such as raw fruits, fresh vegetable, whole grains, etc.Fiber adds bulk to the stool and makes defecation easier because it passes through the intestine essesntially unchanged.
  4. EXERCISE - Sedentary life style such as sitting all day, lack of exercise, prolonged bed rest and inactivity contribute to constipation.Movement promotes peristalsis. Some physical activity and abdominal exercise strengthen abdominal muscles that facilitate defecation.
  5. POSITIONING - A sitting position with knees flexed straightens the rectum, enhances the use of abdominal muscles , and facilitates defecation. For bedridden patients;assist the patient in assuming a high- fowler's position with knee flexed. This position best uses gravity and allows for effective Valsalva maneuver.
