SITUATION
A nurse makes a medication error and a patient goes in to respiratory depression. That nurse must now go before the ethics committee. The nurse is faced with a discussion of the code of ethics for nursing.
PLEASE MAKE A BRIEF REPLY TO THE FOLLOWING DISCUSSION
1) Discuss nursing practice that could have prevented the error.
Properly following medication administration protocols would have helped prevent the error. The nurse should have performed the three checks and ten rights of medication administration. The drug interactions, adverse effects, contraindications, appropriateness, and allergies should have also been checked.

according to the code of ethics of nursing nurses should be sensitive to the ethical challenges and do best to fulfill their moral duties. it also give information of importance of informed consent , and respect the privacy and confidentiality of the patients ,efficient performance of the personal duties etc.
within the limits of his/her power and duties attempt toprovide a safe and healthy environment for client. also maintain the saftey of the patient.
consider the client demands regardless of their age , sex, culture or religion.
When presenting or applying new product in clinical practice, have a complete knowledge of its risks. and also provide complete information about the positive and negative effects of product.In case of emergency immediate therapeutic action should be taken by the nurse to save patient life
Their are various strategies for preventing the medication errors -
1.Ensure the five rights of medication adminstration
2. Follow the proper medication reconciliation procedures.
3.double check or triple check procedures should be done .
4.Have the physician to read it back.
5. place a zero in front of the decimal point.
6.Document evrething.
7.ensure proper storage of medications for proper efficacy.
8.learn about medication administration policies, regulations, guidelines , drug interactions, adverse effects , contraindications.
9. consider having a drug guide available at all times.
