Create an algorithm for hypothermia in the emergency department.

Create an algorithm for hypothermia in the emergency department.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Hypothermia is defined as the medical emergency where the body looses heat faster than it can produce heat, causing dangerously low body temperature.

Mild hypothermia is the body temperature between 34 to 35degree celsius. This is the phase where shivering occurs and cardiac output increases.

moderate hypothermia: The body temperature ranges between 30 to 34 degree celsius. This is a dynamic phase where the cardiac output starts to drop.

Severe hypothermia; This is when the body temperature drops below 30 degree celcius. Rewarming of the patient should be done at this stage to improve the bosy temperature.

Algorithm

If the Patient does not have  cardio pulmonary arrest:

  • Step 1:Check the body tenmperature. If body temperature is more that 32 degree celcius then passive external rewarming to be done.
  • Step 2:If the body temerature is less than 32 degree celcius then go for minimal invasive active core rewarming that is iv fluids and external warming with Bair hugger

If the patient has cardio pulmonary arrest

  1. Secure the airway
  2. Initiate CPR
  3. Blood glucose
  4. Antibiotics and steriods as prescribed
  5. Defibrillation if required.
  6. External warming to  improve the body temperature
