Determine the mass (in grams) for 0.513 moles of ammonia. [Hint: determine the molecular formula, and then calculate the molar mass and finally the mass]

Solutions

Expert Solution

Molecular formula of ammonia is NH3.

Molar mass of ammonia = 1x(atomic mass of N) + 3x( atomic mass of H)

                                       = 1x(14.01 g/mol) + 3x(1.008 g/mol)

                                       = 14.01 g/mol + 3.024 g/mol

                                       = 17.034 g/mol

Mass of ammonia = moles of ammonia x molar mass of ammonia = 0.513 mol x (17.034 g/mol) = 8.74 g
