What are some reasons why ELL instructors would differentiate instruction in their classrooms? List and explain at least four reasons.
English language learners may have different learning strategies, learning styles and threshold levels, therefore requiring different kind of inputs in order to learn their best. The academic potential for each student differs and that does not mean that different lesson planning has to be done to meet those needs. However, a basic screening and assessment of learning styles would help teachers and i nstructions to modulate their instruction style accordingly. It helps students learn at their own pace, while still motivating them to reach their best potential and strive for higher. Also, the response of students can then for a feedback loop wherein the instructor gets the pulse of the student and thereafter plans his teaching in alignment to the specific requirement of the learner. When it comes to language especially, some students may have a knack to pick up on a new one, whereas others may be more resistant or slow in general. A basic assessment will therefore help in discerning these factors. This can also be utilised to form peer buddies within classrooms wherein learners can form tiny groups and be of substantial help to one another.
