This case study will focus on ethics in healthcare. For this paper the student will identify an ethical issue in healthcare (preferably an issue that has occurred in the past 12 months) and prepare a case study that will focus on the following areas in 2-3 pages:
1) What was the ethical issue
2) Who does this affect and how
3) Why was this particular decision made
4) What were some alternatives to the decision
1. A recent ethical issue happened in health care is malpractice. A nurse has prepared a Naso gastric tube feeding solution. Actually that was a oral tablet crushed with water formula, to be given as a feed for a 4 year old child. Due to her bussy schedule, to attend another baby in the ward, she handed over the medication filled syringe to another nurse on duty and told her to administer thi sdrug to the child. The second nurse thought its an IV preparetion and she pushed the medications on the IV line instead of pushing through NG tube.
2. But the parents got some confusion with the medication administration and they clarrified its with the nurse who push the medication. by the time, The nurse pushed half of the medications throuh IV line and immediately she disconnected it. The case was immediately reported to the physician and the IV line was immediately removed. Cold packs administerd over the area. The child was taken to the PICU and kept on continuous cardiac monitoring. Antidotes of the medications started and the child kept on monitoring. The incident report of the same was made and both the nurses asked for written apology and explanations. They bith send to a bussy scheduled Neuro surgeri ICU foe 2 weeks to work. The child was saved without any complications like emboli, vasculitis etc.
3. Its the nurses responsibility to maintain a trustful relationship with patient and his family. All Medication rights to be followed by the nurse before adminisytering the medications. Being responsible for her own action is very much important. here the nurse failed to be reponsible for her activities, She handed over the medication to another nurse, they lack a proper communication between them.
4. Improve the communication between the health care providers. Educate them regarding the importance of following ethics. Make them adhere to the rules and regulations of the institutions.
