(business research method)
Sampling is a method used in statistics or research. In sampling a small number of sample is taken from the large population. The sample after being analysed provide the characteristics and features of the entire population. A sample is a subset of the population that represents the entire group.
Sampling methods are classified into probability and non probability.
Probability sampling:- In probability sampling each and every member of the population or business firm's has a full chance of being selected. There is random selection. In this method error can be calculated. Probability methods includes ,Random sampling, systematic sampling and stratified sampling.
Random sampling is the purest form of probability sampling. Each member of the population has an equal chance of being selected. It's prerequisite is that each and every member needs to be identified.
Systematic sampling is also called an "N" name selection technique. After the required sample size has been calculated every Nth record is selected from a list of population members. It is the simplest method of sampling.
Stratified sampling is superior because it reduces the sample error. The population is divided into different stratas. Examples of strata are males and females, managers and non managers. After this the members are choosed from every strata and their actual representation in the population.
Cluster sampling method is used to divide the population into different clusters and than the selection of cluster at randomly. There after one can either study all the members of the selected clusters or again take random samples of these sampled clusters.
Non probability sampling:- in non probability sampling members are selected from the population in some non random manner. Non probability method includes convenience sampling, judgement sampling, quota sampling and snowball sampling.
In convenience sampling, samples are choosed that fits as per the convenience of the researcher. In judgement sampling the researcher selects the sample based on judgement. This is usually an extension of convenience sampling.
