1. The physician orders urine C&S on a patient. The patient asks why it is necessary to do this test. How would you, the medical assistant, clearly explain this to the patient?
2. A patient is asked to bring in a first-morning urine specimen for testing. You, the medical assistant, provide the patient with a container for the collection and explain that it needs to be refrigerated if they cannot bring it to the office right away. How do you explain to the patient the need for a first-morning specimen and the request to refrigerate?
3. A patient is being treated for diabetes. This patient asks you, the medical assistant, why it is necessary a urine specimen is collected each time they come for an office visit. What would you tell this patient?
4. Explain why it is important to initially do a physical analysis of urine that includes reporting the color and appearance.
1.The requirement of urine culture and sensitive is to find which microorganism is causing the infection, and to find out the antibiotics which are sensitive to the microorganism, if the urinary tract is not treated promptly it can lead to recurrent urinary tract infection.
2. Early morning urine sample is more concentrated form, the urinary bladder holds the urine for a longer time, almost 8 hours. It contains more amount of protein or urinary casts, if present. Why it need to be refrigerated because if kept for a longer period at room temperature , and if any bacteria present in the urine it use the glucose and alter the results, and urine collected needs to be given within 24 hours of collection.
3. As you are having diabetes and there is a chance for going to many complications, and one of that is diabetic ketoacidosis, and other is diabetic nephropathy inorder to check the urine acetone as well as protein in urine we advise for urinanalysis each time you visit.
4.the need of reporting the color and appearance of urine is to get an general idea of the condition, the urinary pigment is called urochrome, if urine is red colour it indicates, hematuria, it may due to medication or bladder infection, also knows whether the urine is concentrated or not. Regarding appearance , it will be hazy appearance in case of Urinary tract infection.
