Project champion is an individual who is responsible for successful accomplishment of a project by removing all the bottlenecks from the project and motivating all the employees to work hard in order to achieve the strategic goal of the project. A project champion is a member of a team who has special skills to manage people,resources and process and bring coordination among them. Project champion is an informal role assigned to an individual whose duty is to help the project members to complete the project in a smarter way. A project champion is also called Project Advocate. A project champion cannot be a project manager but a project manager can be a project champion.
Responsibilities of champions:
Risk assessment: A project champion is one who assesses the risk involved in the project and develops the strategies in order to remove the risk.
Project champion is one who forecasts the future associated risk and works on it to avoid such risk.
Need assessment: It is a responsibility of a project champion to assess the need of the project as well as the need of the customers before starting the project.
A project champion is one who bridges the gap between the needs of stakeholders,customers and organization.
Prioritizing the strategies: Project champion has been assigned with the responsibility to prioritize among the various steps included in accomplishment of the project.
Implementation of strategies: After assigning priority to the steps involved in the accomplishment of a project, it is the responsibility of a project champion to implement those strategies in a systematic way in order to successful completion of a project.
Identify bottlenecks: A project champion is one who identifies the upcoming obstacles in the project and develops strategies to remove such obstacles.
Setting benchmark: It is the responsibility of a project champion to set the benchmark among the activities and to identify that employees involved in the project work according to the benchmark.
Reviewing the project: A project champion has assigned the responsibility to review all the activities of a project and to ensure that they are carried in a proper way.
If all activities are carried in a proper way then this will result in a positive accomplishment of a project.
Decision making regarding the project: A Project champion has delegated with the authorities to take all necessary decisions regarding the project.
He should be responsible to take all the necessary decisions including manpower allocation,resource allocation, use of technology,eliminating or adding strategies including in completion of project etc for successful accomplishment of project.
Allocation of resource: A project champion is responsible to allocate resources to the activities to ensure that each activity has a sufficient resource for its accomplishment without delaying in the completion of the project.
Provide feedback: A project champion is responsible to provide feedback to his team members so that they can work hard according to that if any drawback has been found in their working.
Monitors the Project: A project champion is responsible for monitoring the project activities. He should monitor all the activities associated with the project and ensure that all activities are carried out in a proper way.
Act as a liaison officer: A project champion acts as a liaison officer among the management , the employees and the stakeholders.
