Our choices of social media shape our perceptions of events, issues, and people. Cultural memberships influence the content of digital and online communication. Social media have altered how we perceive time and space. People tend to feel anonymous online, even when they have a name associated with their avatar. On the internet, computer mediated conversations lack body language, voice intonation, and other important nonverbal elements. Without these features, people are compelled to fill in the gaps with assumptions about the nonverbal elements. Read the following paragraph (taken from http://archives.obsus.com/obs/english/books/editinc/can_talk.htm; bottom of web page) about a flame war. For some reason, people become much more sensitive when they’re online, and they tend to blow things entirely out of proportion—for example, taking a couple of sentences originally meant to be humorous or sarcastic entirely the wrong way. It’s even worse if you’ve had a bad day and you’ve decided that “no one likes you” (we’ve all had those moments); you’re much more susceptible to misunderstanding messages. Once that happens, everything can go downhill quickly. Instead of asking for clarification (“You were kidding, weren’t you?”) or just ignoring it, many people—forgetting that they’re dealing with another human being on the other end—decide to defend themselves and tell the originator of the offending message exactly what they think of him or her. This outcome is what’s known in the business as a flame. If both sides begin insulting each other, it’s called a flame war (kind of like fighting fire with fire). These digital battles often erupt in “public” and can sometimes be very entertaining to the lurkers.”
Describe a situation online where you witnessed trolling and flaming. What was the situation? How were the comments handled? Do you think this same situation would have happened in a face-to-face environment? Why or why not? How can situations like this be minimized? Please use the terms for your text about social media and nonverbal and guidelines for improving nonverbal communication found in Chapter 5 to respond to this question. Your paper should be a 2-3 page paper citing specific examples and providing detailed analysis incorporation reading and textbook material. If outside sources are used, proper citation of the source should be included.
PLEASE IN YOUR OWN WORDS!!!!! NO PLAGIARISM!!!!!!
With the advancement of technology and science, the world is connected to each other. It's like a Global village. Social media membership and easy access to technology together with different types of gadgets are new ways of reaching to the people. It does not matter which part of the word you are staying, you can talk to the person from another end. This has given rise to chatting or making a friend with an unknown person,
A conversation is verbal means spoken words and nonverbal like tone, gesture, body language, the volume of voice, facial expressions, stance, proximity to the listeners and eye contact,
Social media is known as a great social network tool. But it has impacted teenagers and youth are susceptible to potential harm posed by social media usage cannot be overlooked.
Social media like Facebook or cyberbullying have an adverse effect on the mind of the person if the person is made to feel inferior in the group of social it gives rise to depression or emotional disturbances if they are inferior their social media counterpart or made to feel inferior then a sensitive person suffers from what is commonly known as Facebook depression.
Cyberbullying is a type of false communication, information or hostile information to a particular specific user. Prolong cyberbullying lead a person to depression, isolation, loneliness, stress, anxiety, low self-esteem, and the person develop suicidal tendency.
Excessive use of social media can induce sleep loss.
Chatting or making friends to an unknown person on the net can lend into trouble. Most of the accounts on the Facebook or social media are having false information and profile.
As the profile and information are not correctly given (mostly by teens and youth) the association turns ugly too. The chatting can become a flame war that is heated arguments between two individuals that result in personal abuse and attacking each other during the heated arguments or the topic. The quality of the words used can be highly degrading. and a third person can take advantage of the situations.
Some websites encourage these type of flamewar for the higher rating.
In face to face conversation that is verbal as well as well as nonverbal. Can be amicably resolved, because party concerned are affected by the gesture, tone, body language, and spoken words. The eye contact can tell if the person is telling the truth or not, the tone can establish the intention and the situation can be very well handled.
No doubt social media is helpful in a way it gives information and the world is connected, in case of disaster, natural calamities or finding a lost one and in many ways, it plays a positive role if used in a positive manner.
It contains dangerous side effect if not used in aright manner. It is badly affecting the youth and teens. The anti-social elements are using it in a negative manner playing with human emotions. Every invention has plus or minus points, like an atom bomb if used for the constructive purpose it has enormous energy, If the same atom bomb is used for the destruction it has enormous energy to destroy. It is how we use it.
