Did the founders intend the United States to be a Christian nation? Describe both sides of the argument.
The founding fathers of America never intended to make Christianity as the official religion because it was all intellectuals who wanted Enlightenment as the key for human progress and they also insisted on coming out of the clutches of religion. Second important thing is that the U.S. Constitution is a secular one which separates religion and politics aside thus ensuring no religion takes control of the state. Thirdly, people who came to America from Europe where already facing the heat of religion on them and wanted to escape from both political and religious oppression that were taking the individual rights away by threatening with heaven and earth myths. they also came to America for economic prosperity thus making religion look smaller. The population was mixed with Protestants, Catholics, Jews and even some Muslims thus making it difficult for the founding fathers to hold on to one particular religion. They were afraid of losing unity if they project anyone religion, so they purposely avoided religion by keeping it aside as a private affair.
