Upon entering his office, your therapist asks you to sit down and be comfortable. He then tells you that you should speak freely, and not to worry about censoring any thoughts you may have during the therapy session. He sits behind you to minimize any eye contact--he does not wish to serve as an authority figure during your session. At one point he cautions you about becoming defensive and suggests that you might be unconsciously attempting to block his access into gaining insight into the inner workings of your thought processes. What type of therapy do you think this is? Explain your answer.
The above is the form of Psychodynamic Therapy.Accroding to Psychodynamic Therapy intrapsycic conflicts are the cause of psychological disorder. It involves three stages in the treatment.
Stage 1-The first step of the treatment is to elicit the intrapsycic conflict using two methods-
A.Free association-Once a therapeutic relationship is established and the client feels comfortable the therapist makes him or her lie down on the couch, close his or her eyes and ask him or her to speak whatever comes to mind.Therapist does not interrupt this free flow of ideas ,desires, conflicts of the unconscious which was supressed by the ego.The therapist gets access to client's unconscious by the free uncensored verbal narrative of the client that emerge into the conscious mind.
In the above case also the Therapist did Free Association with the client to know about his unconscious thoughts and desires.
Other Stage of Initial Phase is Dream Analyses that is analysis of client's dreams.
Stage -2 involves Transference and Interpretation as a means of treating the patient. Then come is the resistance.
Stage-3 involves termination of psychotherpy by intellectual and emotional insight.
