  1. According to the text, recent psychological studies have shown that coercive power in managers is becoming less and less effective. Many managers now use authoritarian styles of managing where they force compliance on their subordinates. However, a lot of managers are still trying to use more charismatic styles to try and build relationships and build a “safe space” for their employees. Overall, which do you think is more effective for a company? Why?

Leadership:

Leadership is a process through which an individual binds a group of individual towards attainment of a common goal. The leader should have a clear vision and motivate his team for them to excel in their work.

I feel Charismatic leadership is more important in organization due to below reasons:

Charismatic: This is a style when in a leader gets the work done through his charisma and personal charm. Leader uses interpersonal skills to influence people in the organization which is proven quite effective.

Quality of a Charismatic Leadership which leads to success of an organization:

1. Communication: An effective leader should have the ability to convey messages with clarity. Leader can expect positive results only when he lets his team know what is expected out of them, the vision and mission, strategy of the organization etc. Also communication has to be in a timely manner and the leader should know what to communicate and when to communicate. This quality is mostly present with Charismatic leaders.

2. Decision making: Taking right decision at the right time is must for an effective leader. Decisions have to be appropriate and thought through and should avoid haste decision making. Since Charismatic leaders are more inclusive, decision making is an easy task for them.

3. Personal Charisma: A leader should have the skill to influence others. This can happen only through interpersonal skills. A leader with charisma always has positive effect on his team’s performance.

4. Motivation skills: Motivated teams perform better. Hence one of the important skills of an effective leader is to influence the behaviour of his team members towards achievement of goals. Charismatic leaders are best in motivating teams through their pep talks, inclusiveness etc.

5. Risk taking: An effective leader has to stand by his team at times of emergencies. He has to own responsibility and not blame only the team for irregularities and this is possible only when the leader is friendly and understandable which a Charismatic leader has himself.

6. Project management: To priorities work , to delegate, not to micro manage and to guide when necessary are the typical skills of a good project leader.

Globalization has stimulated much controversy in recent years. Some studies have shown that globalization increases economic growth, narrows the income gap between rich and poor nations and reduces poverty. But some critics argue that globalization may encourage governments to participate in a “race to the bottom”, i.e., countries compete for international investment by offering low or no environmental regulations or labor standards. Evaluate the major arguments.
