Based on Aguinaldo’s letter, what are some of the fraudulent justifications used by American leaders to control the Philippines? What are the sorts of obstacles Aguinaldo mentions that will make America’s conquest of the Philippines so challenging? Was he correct? Who appears to be the intended audience of Aguinaldo’s message?
Answer.
In 1899, Emilio Aguinaldo, a Filipino general and politician, declared Philippine independence . However, at the time, The United States did not recognize Aguinaldo's government, and Aguinaldo declared war on the United States. Aguinaldo drafted a letter addressing the anti war public in the United States To show the outrage by Filipinos against American occupation.
In his letter, Aguinaldo lays out the double standards of the US
state when it occupied Philippines from Spain under the pretext of
protection of humanity.
The US officials entered into an alliance with Philippine chiefs at
Hong Kong and at
Singapore, and promised diplomatic aid and protection in the
Philipino’s attempt to form a government on the principles and
after the model of the government of the United States. Thereupon,
the US navy captured Manila and demolished the old
Spanish garrison. However, the surrender by Spain led to the US
control of the city of Manila on the grounds of further assessment
of the Phillipino’s ability to self-determination. This criteria
was however unjust and it meant that the US government was
hegemonising the Philipino people’s right to a republic.
