Abdul works in a community services environment. Abdul’s manager Sonia has asked him to participate in a work safety inspection to assist with identifying common workplace hazards.

Sonia has provided Abdul with a work safety checklist and hazard reporting forms.

Abdul asked Sonia if he could have some support when completing the components of the assessment that involved infection control. Sonia arranged for Tahlia, the infection control nurse, to support Abdul with the identification of infection hazards.

1). 5 COMMON WORKPLACE HAZARDS

• Physical hazards- Physical hards are very common. They can occur in any where. these include vibration, excessive noise, slips, trips, falls, exposure to radiation, exposure to extreme hot or cold environment, exposure to ultra violet rays.
• Ergonomic hazards- Heavy works that harm the musculoskeletal system, Such as frequent heavy lifting works, Poor posture, heavy works which put a strain on your body,
• Chemical hazards- This can happen if any type of hazardous chemical substance such as solid, liquid or gas that can cause harm to the employees .
• Biological Hazards- Viruses and bacteria can cause serious health issues. These kind of hazards mainly occur in the medical line. Diseases such as hepatitis, HIV/AIDS, TB, Insect bites, Fungi.
• Work organization hazards- In this psychological hazards occurs.Such as- sexual harassment, excessive work load, less staff, lack of unity in work.

2. Infectious Hazards

• HIV/AIDS and hepatitis A,B,C- These are very dangerous disease. It can spread easily to a health care professionals.
• Tuberculosis
• Infections such as ringworm, scabies, enteric infections spread easily.
• Cytomegalo viruses and rubella causing viruses.
• Corona virus
• Leptospirosis

3. During his inspection he should look for personal safety risks such as-

• Working alone- Check for any employee working alone in a deserted area because it may lead to any type of hazard to occur and there may not be any on e nearby if the employee needs any help.
• Violence and bulling in workplace- Behaviour that harm mentally or physically to any employee which can create humiliation and stress should not be tolerated.
• Work related stress- A small amount of stress is present every where, when we take any responsibility there may be some pressure or stress but if the level of stress is too high then the employee can simply talk to the supervisor and take a small break or leave to get fresh.

4. Hazard identification method;

• Carrying out audits of the workplace and work procedures.
• Monitoring and testing the work environment such as looking for noise monitoring, electrical testing, looking for safe atmosphere.
