(c7p44) An Escort and a Camaro traveling at right angles collide and stick together. The Escort has a mass of 1100 kg and a speed of 40 km/h in the positive x direction before the collision. The Camaro has a mass of 1700 kg and was traveling in the positive y direction. After the collision, the two move off at an angle of 74 o to the x axis. What was the speed of the Camaro?(in km/h)
Given that :
mass of Escort, m1 = 1100 kg
velocity of Escort, v1 = 40 km/hr
mass of Camaro, m2 = 1700 kg
velocity of Camaro, v2 = ?
Applying conservation of momentum along the x-axis,
m1 v1 = (m1 + m2) v cos
v = m1 v1 / (m1 + m2) cos { eq.1 }
Applying conservation of momentum along the y-axis,
m2 v2 = (m1 + m2) v sin
v2 = [(m1 + m2) v sin ] / m2 { eq.2 }
inserting the value of v in eq.2,
v2 = [(m1 + m2) sin / m2] [m1 v1 / (m1 + m2) cos ]
v2 = m1 v1 tan / m2 { eq.3 }
What was the speed of the Camaro?
v2 = (1100 kg) (40 km/hr) tan 740 / (1700 kg)
v2 = 90.2 km/hr
