Educators sometimes need access to student’s medical information when it relates to their performance and safety in school. Describe how you plan to gather and keep medical information regarding your students. What are some of the possible concerns in the gathering and storage of this information? How will you prevent any issues from arising concerning this process?
One of the most familiar or usual way to collect medical information of the students is to conduct a medical test once the admission is confirmed. This way it would become an integral part of the admission process. Another way to collect it is through the past records that would be available in the local medical center but this needs some preliminary discussion and permission from the parents and the concerned medical centers or even from the council. The final way to do it is to requesting parents to provide any physical or mental health issues of their wards during the time of the admission. A separate section with a clinic could be set up in the school that would maintain the records of such students.
One of the most important pitfalls in gathering this medical information is that the students might become the victims of bullying by other students. Secondly, the teachers will look at the students with a pre-conceived notion that it's their physical or mental incapacity that prevents them from performing well in the academics. Finally, the students themselves might think of themselves as not worthy of studying.
Firstly, all the information regarding the personal issues should be kept secret excerpt from the teacher concerned. Secondly, there should be a counseling wing that should work towards strengthening the students gain high self-esteem. Finally, there should be a proper communication channel between the school and the concerned teacher, the teacher and the students and the teacher concerned.
